It seems as though cornrow styles have been resurrected since they died out after the black power movement. The likely comeback is due to celebrities such as Alicia Keys, Allen Iverson, and Ludacris rocking these styles with carefully planned designs. I believe it has always been popular among African American children. I have two little girls and could not imagine them making it through the week without me styling their hair with either double-stranded twist cornrows or another cornrow style with ponytails.
cornrow designs are still widespread in Africa and historically have always been completely geometric. Hieroglyphs and sculptures from thousands of years ago have braids etched into the back of their heads.
Cornrows,(also known as track braids or flat braids), are braids that lay directly on the scalp. They are accomplished by braiding the hair in a three strand pattern as close to the scalp as possible. They run the length of the scalp from the forehead to the nape of the neck. They are decorated with beads, shells, barrettes, etc. By weaving in extensions, you can create styles that can be colored, extended, or have a different wave or curl pattern than your natural hair.
Many salons have created geometric patterns and designs in the braids with curling, wavy or zig zag lines. Determining how much do cornrows cost and the time to complete vary depending on the experience level of your stylist and your location. The required hair length for cornrows is usually two inches.
We have very easy to follow cornrow instructions that you should be able to use whether you are an experienced braider or a novice. For ideas on styles, be sure to check out our gallery for men and for women.
