Caring for and Styling Micro Braids

Micro Braids remain popular because of their size. These mini braids are so small that you can style them in any way that you like. Even more is that they can be any length or color that you like.

They are also known as individual braids, shreds, or micro box braids.

They can take up to eight hours to install if there is just one person working on your head and they may take even longer to remove if you do not know how to properly remove them. In fact they are such a BEAST to remove that I pay someone else to remove them for me. All of this for a hairstyle! We are used to going through pain to achieve beauty and they are beautiful if done correctly.

However, if you have thin or dry hair, I would recommend a black braided hairstyle or twist hairstyle that has more body like kinky twists or box braids. These style will make your hair appear fuller. In your thinning areas, the stylist is likely to part your hair into very small sections in order to install more braids. Having such small amounts of your hair weaved into the braiding hair is not healthy. It weighs down on your real hair and can cause breakage, especially around the hairline.

It is a great hairstyle for transitioning because they provide a neat, professional appearance that you can style any way you like.

The last time I had micros was during my second pregnancy and birth. I don't put any chemicals in my hair during pregnancy. No dyes, perms, or certain creams. Since I worked up until the day I delivered my baby, these were perfect.

Maintaining your Micro Braids

Here are some tips I have collected that should help you keep your braids in as long as possible without damaging your hair.

  • You can keep your braids in for two to three months.
  • Avoid is your hair is brittle or damaged.
  • Works better on short hair because you don't have to braid down too far and the braiding hair appears fuller and more natural looking.
  • Never install any braid style just after you get a perm or relaxer.
  • Deep condition before having them installed.
  • Continue to oil and wash your hair even after they have been installed
  • Learn how to properly remove your micro braids.
  • Have your braids done by an experienced professional.
  • Take care of your hair line! Keep it conditioned and moisturized. Take a bread from styling your hair but not caring for your hair.

There are different types of braiding hair used for micro's to create different looks. There are wet and wavy, strait, and curly.
