Tips on Using Relaxers for Black Hair

There is so much advice out there on how to use relaxers for black hair. It is a shame that most of it is incorrect.

I will offer some solid advice on how to properly use relaxers but no matter what I say or what I know, you will not benefit from it as much as you would benefit from taking the time to learn about how to properly care for your hair and adopt a healthy regime.

Tips on How to Successfully Relax Your Hair

  1. Do not wash your hair for a couple of days prior to the time you plan on applying the relaxer.
  2. Prevent having a sensitive scalp when you relax by drinking a lot of water a few days prior to relaxing. Also, you should avoid scratching and drinking carbonated, caffeine, or acidic beverages prior to applying a relaxer.
  3. Always base your scalp. This is really important.
  4. Do not begin by applying at the hairline.
  5. Always have a timer and never , ever over process your hair. Take it out at the recommended time, neutralize correctly to stop the chemical process and never apply more relaxer to hair that has been previously relaxed.
  6. Wear protective gloves as you are working with harsh chemicals. Some of the Ph factors of relaxers are higher than those in Liquid Drano.
  7. Wait at least two weeks after you dye your hair to apply a relaxer.
  8. Make for sure your hair and scalp are in a good condition. You can do this by deep conditioning. Do not wash your hair right before you apply your relaxer. Ph factors in shampoo conflict with PH factor in relaxers.
  9. Do not apply a relaxer to a child's hair until they have gone through puberty. Their hair will continue to change until then and applying a relaxer could damage the hair.
  10. Do not mix different chemical relaxers.
  11. Rinse with warm water, not hot.
