Like a sew-in, tree braids can be cornrow based. They are also known as Lacing. They are installed by braiding in the hair weave along with your natural hair in cornrows. As you go along, you allow small chunks of the fake hair to flow down. There are no chemicals, heat, glue, tape, or strings used! As long as you find a stylists that is not a heavy handed braider, it should not cause any damage to your hair.
You can also get individual tree braids that resemble micro braids. The difference is that with micro braids the hair is braided down further. Therefore, the weave starts flowing closer to the scalp which is more natural looking. Some people use a combination of the cornrow based tree braids and the individuals. They may have the individuals around the perimeter and the cornrow based ones in the middle.
They take 3-5 hours to complete and are definitely IN! They can be rocked whether you have natural or relaxed hair. When you are buying the hair, be sure to get about 2 packs of hair, human or synthetic, and the hair should be at least 14" long. I would recommend using hair in bulk packages. Having the cornrows small and close together will cut down on the amount of shedding. Most wearers are encouraged to use synthetic hair because human hair slips and sheds.
To care for your style, wash bi-weekly with a waterless shampoo or diluted Sea Breeze. Braid the extensions and wear a silk bonnet at night to make the style last longer.
